Symphony honors young musicians
Cristina Ciubancan of Cary won first place in the junior division of the N.C. Symphony’s Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Youth Concerto Competition.
Cristina and the other contest participants performed a concerto movement of their choice from memory in two rounds of auditions. Cristina, 13, a violinist and seventh-grader at West Cary Middle School, performed the first movement of Haydn’s Concerto for Violin in G Major. She received a $300 cash prize.
Pianist Henry Hsieh, 18, of Cary tied for second place in the senior division, for ages 16-21, and received a $250 cash prize. Henry, who graduated this year from Enloe High School in Raleigh, performed a movement from Beethoven’s Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73.
