Don’t forget the Pledge of Allegiance
I attended the flag raising on the Fourth of July in downtown Apex, and something was missing.
There were families, there were activities, there were games and lots to do. The was a speech containing a quote from Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.” There was even a token instrumental verse of “The Star-Spangled Banner” played over the loudspeaker.
What was missing was the Pledge of Allegiance, and I wonder why.
I pledge allegiance to flag of the United States of America, and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
These are powerful words. A pledge is more than a promise. It’s an oath to be allied with the people of the United States as an individual. Even though we often squabble and fight, it’s more important to be reminded that we are all in this together. This unified pledge of alliance to our nation should never be omitted.
