Friday’s football games
Middle Creek at Green Hope
SWAC coaches have felt these were the league’s two best teams since the beginning of summer. Is this the conference title game? Nobody in Wake County throws it as often as these two. Middle Creek (4-1, 1-0) is ranked third in The News & Observer area top 15, while Green Hope (5-1, 2-0) is No. 12. The Mustangs have won the last nine in a row in the series.
Head-to-head: Middle Creek leads all-time series 11-2.
Never miss a local story.
Fuquay-Varina at Apex
Neither team has to put it in the air much to put up points. Fuquay-Varina (3-2, 1-0) is led by Damarus Williams’ 657 yards rushing and 10 TDs. Apex (3-2, 0-1) is led by running back Isaiah Totten’s 885 yards and 11 TDs.
Head-to-head: Fuquay leads 8-6 since 2000.
Athens Drive at Holly Springs
The Jaguars (1-5, 0-2) need a breakthrough after so many close losses, but they can’t keep turning the ball over. Holly Springs (3-2, 0-1) has moved tight end Wade Johnson to quarterback for the last two games due to injuries.
Head-to-head: Athens leads all-time series 5-1.
Cary at Panther Creek
Cary’s inability to find the end zone doesn’t match up well with Panther Creek’s stout defense. The Imps (0-5, 0-1) are scoring just 8.8 points per game, while Panther Creek (4-1, 1-0) is allowing just 10.6.
Head-to-head: Cary leads all-time series 4-3.
J.F. Webb at Cardinal Gibbons
The Crusdaers (4-1, 1-0) have never lost to the Warriors (2-3, 0-1) out of Oxford. The Crusaders are one point away from being unbeaten this year, while Webb is coming off a 49-0 loss to Chapel Hill.
Headto-head: Gibbons leads all-time series 5-0.
Cary Christian at Arendell Parrott, 7:30 p.m.
The Knights (1-4) won their first game of 2014 last week, 49-6 against Community Christian of Wilson, but now make the long trip to Kinston to face undefeated Arendell Parrott Academy (5-0).
Harrells Christian at Wake Christian, 7:30 p.m.
After a solid start to the year, the Bulldogs (4-2) open up conference play against Harrells Christian. Camaran Hinnant intercepted three passes in a 68-30 win over Kestrel Heights last week.
All game times are 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted
Player of the week
Isaiah Laster, Panther Creek: The junior safety had two interceptions and a fumble return for a touchdown in a 28-14 win against Athens Drive.
