Friday’s football games
Panther Creek at Middle Creek
These are the only two Southwest Wake Athletic Conference teams who have yet to lose in league play. Middle Creek (6-0, 2-0) is coming off a 44-7 rocking of one of two teams that seems primed to challenge the Mustangs this year. If Middle Creek can solve the riddle of Panther Creek’s stellar defense —the Catamounts (5-1, 2-0) are allowing just 10 points per game — the next four games won’t form much of a challenge.
Head-to-head: Middle Creek leads 7-1 all-time.
Never miss a local story.
Apex at Athens Drive
Both Apex (4-2, 1-1) and Athens Drive (2-5, 1-2) got big wins last week. Apex has scored at least 44 points in all four of its wins and has the conference’s first 1,000-yard rusher this year in Isaiah Totten.
Head-to-head: Apex leads 9-6 since 1999.
Holly Springs at Cary
Cary’s lone touchdown last week was a pick-six, which means it has been four straight games since the Imps (0-6, 0-2) have scored an offensive touchdown. Holly Springs (3-3, 0-2) has had offensive troubles of its own in recent weeks, having scored 13 points or less in the last two weeks.
Head-to-head: Cary leads 3-2 all-time.
Green Hope at Fuquay-Varina
Green Hope (5-2, 2-1) and Fuquay-Varina (3-3, 1-1) are two teams who must regroup quickly after disappointing losses last week. The Bengals have won the last 10 in the series.
Head-to-head: Fuquay leads 12-2 all-time.
Cardinal Gibbons at Southern Durham
Gibbons (5-1, 2-0) is on a five game-winning streak while defending state champion Southern Durham (6-0, 2-0) is ranked No. 1 in the state and has 19 straight wins. These two met twice last year, with Southern taking both in close fashion.
Head-to-head: Southern leads 2-0 all-time.
Lawrence Academy at Cary Christian
Cary Christian (1-5, 1-5) hosts Lawrence Academy (1-5, 1-5) out of Merry Hill in a game that wil have NCISAA 8-man playoff implications.
Head-to-head: Cary Christian won 64-26 last year.
Wake Christian at Ravenscroft, 7:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs (5-2, 1-0) are averaging 60 points per game over their last two while this is the league opener for Ravenscroft (3-4).
Head-to-head: Ravenscroft won 50-22 last year.
All game times are 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted
