Friday’s football games:
Panther Creek at Green Hope
Remember how these two met on Nov. 7 and it was the most meaningful Highway 55 rivalry game in their head-to-head history? Scratch that. Now this game takes the title. Both Panther Creek and Green Hope may be experiencing déjà vu. Last week they repeated their week 11 assignments with Panther Creek holding on at home against Holly Springs and Green Hope handling visiting Apex. This week, they repeat week 12’s showdown, which Green Hope won 17-10.
Green Hope’s defense that night was outstanding. The Falcons held Panther Creek to five rushing yards on 26 carries and just 148 total yards of offense. Panther Creek’s only touchdown was set up by one of its three interceptions. It will be up to Green Hope to match the intensity of that night, which will be something like trying to put toothpaste back into the tube. The Falcons left a lot of tears – fans, coaches, parents, players – on the field after winning its first league title since 2004.
Panther Creek will look back at that contest and look at the opportunities missed. As little as it moved the ball, it had a chance to tie the game in the final minute. The Catamounts offense came alive late last week to keep its season alive, and it’ll have to spill over into this game. While it’s nice to have a defense as good as PC’s is, the Catamounts offense has to move the ball well enough to not put all of the pressure on one side of the ball. Panther Creek did well against Green Hope, allowing just 236 yards of offense and forcing three turnovers. But Green Hope moved the chains often.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Player of the Week
Brenden Magner, Panther Creek: Do you like quarterbacks who can rally their team to a win in the playoffs after trailing by 14 entering the fourth quarter? Of course you do. And that’s why you’ll like us picking Magner this week. He awakened a sluggish Catamounts offense to throw three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime periods to help Panther Creek beat Holly Springs 24-21. He was 15-of-31 for 225 yards.
