Middle Creek and Cardinal Gibbons were two of the more than 40 teams invited to this year’s 11th Brittany Willis Soccer Showcase at the J. Burt Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson. Both played Friday night and both lost two two of the best teams in the state.
Middle Creek fell 6-1 to powerful Jacksonville. The Mustangs are 4-3 this season while Jacksonville stands 7-2-1.
Cardinal Gibbons lost 1-0 to Southern Pines’ Pinecrest High. The Crusaders are now 5-1 on the season while Pinecrest is 4-1 after losing 1-0 to Jacksonville on Saturday.
The Brittany Willis Soccer Showcase started in 2005 as a way to remember the life of a Wilson teen soccer player who was murdered. It brings teams from across the state together each year for one or two games on Friday and Saturday.
The tournament also raises funds for the Brittany T. Willis Scholarship Fund, which is open to all Wilson County high school graduates who will pursue post-secondary education. Individual and team donations go directly to this scholarship fund. Sponsor donations are used to operate the showcase games each spring and fall and excess funds are then moved to the scholarship fund.
