Holly Springs junior Chris McKoy knew he had some big shoes to fill with senior running back Tray Staten out of Friday’s came against defending Southwest Wake Athletic Conference champion Green Hope.
McKoy rose to the challenge, as he scored on a 1-yard run with 44 seconds left, and then Davis Ferguson completed the two-point conversion pass to Bryce Wheaton to propel the Golden Hawks to a 22-21 win.
Holly Springs (2-2, 1-0) had led 14-7 at intermission, but Green Hope (2-2, 0-1) scored twice in the second half and appeared to be in control after a 15-play 86-yard drive capped by a 5-yard Paul Robinson touchdown put them ahead 21-14 midway through the fourth quarter.
Never miss a local story.
Ferguson scrambled for four yards on a fourth down play with 2:22 left in the game to keep the Hawks’ chances alive, setting up McKoy’s touchdown a few plays later. Ferguson needed to reach the Falcons 14-yard line and secured the first down by inches.
They said it
“I didn’t know if we had enough gas left in the tank if we had to go to overtime,” said Holly Springs head coach Robert Furth after his first SWAC victory. “It was now or never, and the kids just responded. I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
3 who mattered
Chris McKoy, Holly Springs: The junior running back filled in admirably for Staten, who was out with an ankle injury. McKoy finished the game with 185 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. “We’ve got to keep our offense rolling and just do what we know we can do,” McKoy said.
Trevor Losito, Green Hope: Losito scored twice for the Falcons and had 104 combined rushing and receiving yards. The senior was Green Hope QB Tucker Burkinshaw’s favorite target, catching four passes for 43 yards.
Stephen Gay, Holly Spring: The junior wide receiver was injured with 8:02 left in the third period. Gay appeared to hurt his neck, and the game was stopped for about 15 minutes as he was taken to the hospital. Furth said the Holly Springs players became inspired after hearing that their teammate was able to move his extremities.
