A 16-year-old Durham mother was charged with attempted murder Wednesday after investigators said she tried to smother her two-month-old son with a towel earlier this summer.
Marelin Portillo, of Hardee Street in Durham, was being held at the Durham County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail and was scheduled to be in court Thursday.
The charge resulted from an ongoing investigation by police and the Durham County Social Services Department, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.
Authorities said that Portillo put a towel over the child’s face and held its nostrils closed.

Police did not say what ended the incident, but Michael said the baby is in good health.
