A 5-year-old was in intensive care at Duke University Hospital on Tuesday after he and his mother were hit while crossing University Drive, police said.
The incident happened about 6:15 p.m. Monday in the 3200 block near Dixon Road, police said.
Police said Roxann Dixon and her son were headed north on Dixon Road and were trying to cross University Drive when an eastbound Toyota Avalon struck them, police said.
Dixon was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver, Steven Gardner, 47, of Cary, had not been charged with any violations, police said.
They ruled out alcohol as a factor in the accident and were continuing their investigation, a police spokesman said.
