One killed, one hurt as crash closes section of MLK Parkway in Durham

A 33-year-old Durham man died early Monday in a single-car crash that closed a portion of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and to which police said alcohol and speed contributed.

One man was killed and another critically injured early Monday when their car went into a turn too fast on a ramp from U.S. 15-501 to Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, went airborne and crashed into a Jersey barrier, police said.

The crash closed MLK Parkway between University Drive and U.S. 15-501 as well as the exit from northbound 15-501 to MLK.

Franco Juan Sanchez, 33, was driving the 2002 Subaru when it crashed about 3:45 a.m. and died at the scene, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

Edward Frye Mitchell III, 24, of Durham was a passenger and was taken to Duke University Hospital.

Crash investigators determined that alcohol and speed both contributed to the accident, Michael said.
