Police arrested Amy Suzanne Pittman on Wednesday morning on manslaughter, felony child abuse and misdemeanor charges that a grand jury issued in connection with the shooting death of her 9-year-old son this spring.
Pittman, 36, was arrested on Rock Street, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.
Police had announced Tuesday that a Durham County grand jury returned the indictments in the shooting, which took place about 9:40 p.m. on April 28 at a home on Macon Street, just north of downtown.
Police described the shooting of Pttman’s son, Christian Pittman, as an accident. Police Chief Jose Lopez said at the time that Christian and an older brother were playing with a gun when it went off. Christian was pronounced dead at the house.
Lopez said in April that police expected to file a criminal charge against the adult who was responsible for securing the gun and keeping it away from the children.
Amy Pittman was indicted on one count of voluntary manslaughter; three counts of felony child abuse – gross negligence; three counts of misdemeanor child abuse; three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and one count of failure to store firearms to protect minors.
Police say there were three children at home at the time of the shooting, and that Amy Pittman was not there.
