Sheriff’s deputies say they found more than 84 pounds of marijuana in a man’s car when they stopped him and $50,000 in cash and several guns when they searched his home Monday.
Clifton Jones III, 43, of 22 Beechtree Court was driving the vehicle that was stopped, Durham County sheriff’s deputies assigned to the agency’s Anti-Crime and Narcotics Unit said. They did not disclose where they arrested Jones.
With Jones, sheriff’s spokesman Brian Jones said, was Hashim Black, 41, of 1212 Park Ave. in Durham.
In the car was 38.156 kilograms of marijuana, or 84.12 pounds, deputies reported.
After deputies got a search warrant for Jones’ home, a single-family house off Carpenter Fletcher Road, they found two handguns, an assault rifle and the cash, Jones said.
They said they believe Jones was involved in an interstate drug operation that used United Parcel Service packages to move marijuana.
Both men were charged with trafficking in marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, conspiracy to traffic in marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jones was also charged with maintaining a vehicle to keep and sell drugs.
Jones was held in the Durham County Detention Facility in lieu of $455,000 bail and Black in lieu of $450,000.
