Word is getting out about Durham’s fantastic food scene.
Numerous downtown restaurants received praise from Bon Appétit Magazine this week. An article in the latest edition provides a walking snapshot of Durham’s wide-ranging palette and outdoor-activity offerings.
“Durham, North Carolina has turned into a hotbed of exciting new restaurants and stores within blocks of one another,” said article author Emma Wartzman. “That central square mile, mostly a cluster of places lining Main Street and the surrounding blocks, has emerged as one of the country’s most vibrant — and most walkable — dining, drinking, and shopping destinations.”
The “Durham, NC — Where Great Things Happen” Twitter feed was quick to promote the latest good news that came on Tuesday, which also happened to be National Food Day.

“It’s fitting that it’s #NationalFoodDay because Bon Appétit Magazine just featured a ton of amazing spots in Durham!” they said “Congratulations to American Meltdown, Bar Brunello, Bar Virgile, Cocoa Cinnamon, Dame’s Chicken and Waffles, Durty Bull Brewing Company, Littler, Lucky’s Delicatessen, M Kokko, Pie Pushers Pizza, Pizzeria Toro, The Durham, and Scratch.”
Getting praise from Bon Appétit Magazine or any other national publication never gets old for Durham restauranteurs.
Mary Deal, general manager of Lucky’s Delicatessen said it says a lot for Durham to continue receiving this type of national publicity.
“We’re really happy with it,” Deal said. “We’ve worked really hard and just got by our one-year anniversary so we’re trying to not let it blow up our egos too much.”
Wartzman raved over the Reuben served by Lucky’s and complimented the choice of pimiento cheese on the side.
