The Durham County Sheriff’s Office has reported the death of a 40-year-old man in the custody of the Durham County jail Sunday night.
According to a statement released by the Sheriff’s Office, the unnamed inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at the Durham County Detention Facility.
The statement said preliminary findings suggest the inmate died of natural causes. His identity was not being made immediately available pending the notification of his family.
Sheriff’s detectives are conducting a death investigation, which is standard practice, the Sheriff’s Office said in its statement.
In compliance with standard protocol, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office said it will notify the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) of the in-custody death and the State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
No further information was being made available Sunday night.
