Police are investigating a Friday evening robbery at the State Employees Credit Union in Durham.
Around 5:30 p.m. Friday, a man entered the SECU on Ben Franklin Boulevard and demanded money. There was no weapon seen and he fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to a news release from the Durham Police Department.
Investigators said it’s possible the same suspect went to a different bank a few hours earlier and announced a robbery, but then said he was only joking.
A man wearing a hat and sunglasses entered a First Citizens Bank on North Roxboro Street around 3:30 p.m. and told employees, “This is a stickup.” He told tellers it was a joke and left, police said in a news release.

He wore a similar hat as the person who later robbed the SECU, surveillance photos show. Investigators said the man who approached First Citizens tellers matches the description of the man who robbed the SECU.
