Vandals plugged up a sewer line in Sherwood Park in Durham causing an estimated 216,000 gallons of sewage to spill into a tributary of Ellerbe Creek, the city announced Wednesday.
The sewer line that runs through some woods in the park was found overflowing at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Vandals had removed the cover from a manhole and threw rocks from a nearby creekbed into it, said Junior Mobley, assistant superintendent of the Department of Water Management.
It took crews about an hour to remove the stones and stop the overflow, Mobley said.
The area around the manhole has been cleaned up, and there appears to be no long-term environmental damage, he said.
