Police have charged a 60-year-old man with fondling young girls in two stores and are concerned he may have done it to others.
Daniel Leon Terrell, of Durham was indicted this week on sexual offense charges involving two separate incidents, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said Friday.
Terrell was charged with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor under 12 years old and two counts of assault on a female. Police arrested Terrell on Wednesday and transported him to the Durham County jail. He was released after posting a $20,000 bond, Michael said.
The first incident was reported on Aug. 29 at Sam’s Club on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard. Police think Terrell fondled a 5-year-old girl inside the store, but he was not identified until a second incident last month.
In that case, investigators think Terrell fondled a 6-year-old girl inside a Durham grocery store on May 23. The stepmother of the 6-year-old told The News & Observer that she was concerned that he was released.
The woman said she was shopping at Kroger with her stepdaughter on May 23 when she turned to see a man with his hand up the child’s skirt. The woman said she screamed for help, but the man was allowed to leave the store. The incident was captured on the store video, she said.
It is the policy of The News & Observer not to release the names of people who may have been the victims of sexual abuse.
Terrell is not a registered sex offender and has no prior criminal convictions, state records show. Police urge people who think they have information about incidents involving Terrell to contact Investigator N. Badua at 919-560-4440, ext. 29324.
