A bystander rescued one of two men from a capsized canoe on Durham County’s Little River Lake, but the other man has not been located, according to a Durham Sheriff’s Office news release.
A sheriff’s office search and recovery team Sunday searched the waters and a nearby bridge at 1376 Orange Factory Road for the second person, who is presumed drowned, deputies said. Neither man was wearing a life jacket when the canoe flipped around 9:38 a.m. Sunday.
The sheriff’s office said Monday that its search personnel had left the lake. State Wildlife Resources Commission police, who deputies said was in charge of the incident, planned to continue patrols in the area in hopes of spotting the body, a sheriff’s office statement said.
The man who was rescued was transported to a hospital, deputies said. More information was not immediately available.
