A woman left her 18-month-old girl with several adults Sunday night while she ran an errand. When the woman returned, she found that her child had drowned in an outdoor pool at the Clayton home where they were visiting, a spokeswoman with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
The drowning happened around 9 p.m. at 975 Lee Road, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Tammy Amaon.
The child apparently wandered off and somehow ended up in the pool, Amaon said.
“The mother had other adults there watch the child while she was away,” she said Monday. “The mother got back and was looking for the girl, and they found her in the pool.”
Never miss a local story.
Sheriff’s deputies have determined the drowning was an accident and will not file charges, Amaon said.
