Accidents and disabled vehicles caused headaches on Interstates 40 and 540 on Thursday morning, backing up westbound traffic on both highways.
Interstate 40 was jammed south of Raleigh beginning at about the South Saunders Street interchange at about 9 a.m.
North of the city, Interstate 540 was packed with vehicles west of Falls of Neuse Road.
A minor accident about 8:30 near I-40 mile marker 301 and a disabled car a short time later caused the problems there.
Never miss a local story.
It was unclear what caused I-540 traffic to back up.
