Two women were killed and three other people were injured early Saturday morning when their vehicle was struck by a hit-and-run motorist on New Bern Avenue in East Raleigh, Raleigh police said.
Mateo Guzman-Palacios, 32, has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving while license suspended, failing to stop at a red light, and two counts of felony hit and run.
Brittany Williams, 24, and Naomi Mercury, 18, died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash, which happened just before 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of New Bern Avenue and Trawick Road, just northeast of the Raleigh Beltline about a mile from WakeMed.
The other three suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said in a statement.
The accident occurred when a pickup truck, thought to be a Chevrolet Avalanche, ran a red light and struck the victims’ vehicle, which was turning north onto Trawick Road, the police said. The truck then left the scene.
The truck is believed to be a dark Avalanche, possibly black with a grey front bumper, of model year 2002-2006, police said.
