Police added two felony hit-and-run charges Tuesday against a Mexican man arrested in connection with a car crash that killed two people and hurt three others early Saturday on New Bern Avenue.
The new charges make four counts of felony hit-and-run after an accident causing serious injury or death against Mateo Palacio Guzman, 32.
Guzman also faces two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and traffic citations for the crash that killed Brittany Williams, 24, and Naomi Mercury, 18.
The new charges, filed by police crash investigators after consulting with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, involve injuries to Tyrone Marquis Daniels,26, and Nathan Lee Norris Jr., 33, arrest warrants said.
The decision not to file a third additional felony charge was based on the extent of injuries to the three survivors, police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan said.
Guzman is an illegal immigrant who has been deported from the United States three times, federal immigration officials said.
Police said Guzman showed police an immigration green card that listed his name as Mateo Guzman-Palacios, and he is carried that way on their records and in arrest warrants.
County jail and arrest listings, state prison records and federal records carry the man with the same fingerprints as Mateo Palacio Guzman.
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman said Tuesday that Guzman has not been given a green card and that the document shown to police was a forgery.
The new charges brought Guzman’s bail to $710,000.
