A man who grew up in what is now Umstead State Park will speak Saturday about what the area was like before it became a park 80 years ago.
Joe Grissom’s father ran the Company Mill on Crabtree Creek until it was lost in a flood in the late 1930s. Grissom will speak at 1 p.m. Saturday in a picnic shelter at the head of the Company Mill Trail, near the park’s Harrison Avenue entrance.
He’ll later lead a walk to the site of the mill and his former home.
The free event is sponsored by the Umstead Coalition as part of its celebration of the park’s beginnings in 1934. For more information, go to www.umsteadcoalition.org/.
