More than 141,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into a creek off Milburnie Road before a pipe clogged with paper and grease was discovered Friday afternoon, according to city officials.
Workers with the Public Utilities Department discovered the overflow at 1:15 p.m. at 2775 Milburnie Road, near North Peartree Lane. It took about an hour and a half to clear the blockage, city officials said, and cleanup wasn’t expected to be done until Saturday afternoon.
City officials estimate the overflow had occurred nearly 7 hours before it was discovered and that about 141,750 gallons spilled into an unnamed tributary of Crabtree Creek.
The city discourages people from washing grease down their sinks and putting paper products other than toilet tissue into their toilets.
