A suspected drunk driver was charged with murder Thursday after a head-on collision over the weekend that killed a 22-year-old motorist.
Latisha Nivcole Dixon, 33, was charged with second-degree murder shortly after her release from WakeMed in Raleigh where she was being treated for injuries she sustained in the accident early Sunday morning in Southeast Raleigh.
The crash happened just before 6:40 a.m. Sunday. Police say Dixon was behind the wheel of a Dodge Stratus traveling south on New Hope Road when her car crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a Hyundai Sonata driven by Terrance Tyreek Smallwood.
Emergency workers transported both drivers to WakeMed, where Smallwood later died, said Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue.
Police transported Dixon to the Wake County jail, where she is being held without bail. In addition to murder, police charged Dixon with felony death by motor vehicle.
