A 25-year-old man died, another man was seriously hurt and three others escaped injury when a Jeep they were in hit a curb outside a bar in Wake Forest early Monday and the driver was thrown out and run over, police said.
Carl Wilson Stancil of 825 Wait Ave. was driving recklessly in a parking lot outside a Carolina Ale House at 11685 Northpark Drive when the accident happened about 2:30 a.m., police said in an accident report. Police suspect Stancil was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the report.
The 1994 Jeep ran over Stancil, jumped a second curb and ran through a grassy area and into another parking lot before one of the people in it got into the driver’s seat and hit the brakes, investigators said.
EMS crews rushed Stancil and Billy Damien Cromartie, 35, of Wake Forest to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, police said. Cromartie was listed in fair condition.
Another man and two women who were passengers in the Jeep were unhurt, police said.
Investigators estimated the Jeep was going about 25 mph when the accident happened.
“The driver ... was operating the vehicle recklessly,” police said in their description of the accident.
