A toddler in North Raleigh accidentally shot himself in the face Friday afternoon after gaining access to a handgun, and a man faces charges related to the shooting, police say.
The shooting took place shortly before 4 p.m. in the 5200 block of Evergreen Forest Way, said Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue.
Officers found a child of nearly 3 years of age who had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his “facial area,” Sughrue said. Emergency workers took the child to WakeMed for treatment of “serious injuries,” he said. The child later was moved to Duke Hospital in Durham.
Jamick Dakota Corley, 34, was taken into custody at the scene, police said in a news release. Corley was being held Friday night at the Wake County Detention Center on charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number and failure to store a firearm safely.
