Police arrested a Cary mother Sunday in the death of her 4-month-old son in March.
Shenequa Walker, 33, of 14301 Praxis Way, is charged with felony child abuse – a willful act or omission causing serious bodily injury – and involuntary manslaughter.
Cary officials reported receiving a call at 8:01 a.m. March 3 from an unidentified person, who said Walker’s baby was “unresponsive.” Emergency workers found the baby dead at the scene.
Walker was arrested just after 5 p.m. Sunday following an extensive investigation, Cary police reported. If convicted, she could get up to five years in prison for the child abuse charge, plus up to three and a half years for involuntary manslaughter.
Walker is being held in the Wake County Detention Center in lieu of $500,000 bail. She is scheduled to appear in a Wake County courtroom Monday.
“While we are relieved that an arrest has been made in the death of baby A.J., the baby’s death is a tragedy,” Cary police Lt. Brian Smith said. “We appreciate the efforts of those who were involved in investigating this case, and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”
Cary police have not released any further details about the baby’s death.
