Shaw University plans a sizable mural for Blount Street.
The school, located on the south end of downtown Raleigh, is nearing its 150th anniversary celebration.
The Raleigh City Council agreed in March to put $10,000 toward the project. The university was planning a $135,000 fund-raising drive for a broader beautification project, Councilman Eugene Weeks said at the meeting.
Blount Street runs through the middle of the school’s campus, bordered on either side by high walls. The mural should be finished by the time of the school’s homecoming celebration this November.
In a written release, the school tied its plans to the city’s broader effort to improve its “southern gateway.”
The school planned to release more details about the project and its artist on Wednesday morning.
