A contract school transport SUV collided with a Wake County school bus on South Smithfield Road near Meadow Run on Wednesday morning, resulting in minor injuries to three students.
Both vehicles were headed to Lake Myra Elementary in Wendell when the crash took place about 9 a.m., Wake schools spokeswoman Lisa Luten said.
The Lucas Transportation Inc. SUV driven by Benita Knight, 21, of Raleigh was traveling south on Smithfield Road, according to State Highway Patrol. Knight traveled off onto the southbound shoulder, struck a ditch and then overcorrected, causing her to cross the center line.
The school bus, driven by Lee Verne Murphy, 51, of Knightdale, was traveling north on Smithfield Road when it collided with the SUV, causing the SUV to overturn and land on the northbound shoulder of Smithfield Road, where the school bus also came to rest.
Three students aboard the SUV were transported to WakeMed with minor injuries, and two were quickly released and went to class, according to Principal Tina Zarzecki.
Two students aboard the school bus were uninjured and released to their guardians.
Both Murphy and Knight were taken to WakeMed with minor injuries. Another adult passenger aboard the school bus, Hattie Holder, 76, of Zebulon was brought to Rex Hospital to be checked out.
Officials charged Knight with failing to maintain lane control and driving left of center.
