A worker at a Raleigh stone company was trying to prevent a 600-pound slab of granite from tipping while a truck was being loaded when the stone fell and killed him, the state Department of Labor said Tuesday.
The accident happened about 4:30 p.m. at Cosmos Granite & Marble at 501 S. New Hope Road, police said.
The man’s name has not been released.
A preliminary report stated that the worker was helping guide the slab onto the bed of a truck when it slipped and began to tip, Labor Department spokesman Neal O’Briant said.

The department will investigate the accident to see if there had been any lapses in safety training or violations of workplace safety standards, O’Briant said.
