Wake County residents can get to see where their trash goes when the South Wake Landfill offers guided public tours Saturday and again in December.
Wake County Solid Waste Management will offer tours of the landfill as well as the drop-off facilities for recycling and household hazardous materials. The tours also include the gas-to-energy facility where methane captured from the landfill fuels refurbished diesel engines to produce about 4 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 4,000 homes during peak demand.
There will be four 1-hour tours on Saturday and again on Dec. 5, starting at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. They’re open to Wake residents 8 years old or older. Space is limited, and advanced registration is required.
