Two people were hurt when they jumped from a second-floor window after fire broke out in their apartment near Garner Magnet High School on Monday night, firefighters said.
Firefighters saw no smoke or flames when they arrived at the Greenbrier Apartments on Shady Lawn Court shortly after 8 p.m., Deputy Chief Tim Herman said.
They encountered smoke when they entered an enclosed breezeway, however, and had to work their way to the apartment where the fire was.
Herman said the two people, who were not identified, apparently were frightened by the smoke and decided to jump.
They were not believed to have life-threatening injuries but were taken to a hospital.
The cause of the fire had not been determined Tuesday morning, Horton said. The Wake County Fire Marshal’s Office was leading an investigation, he said.
The apartment was the only one damaged by fire, Horton said, but tenants were forced out of seven others by smoke and water damage.
