A man charged with hitting an N.C. Central University police officer with his Dodge Charger last week and then driving off has turned himself, the university announced Tuesday.
James Henry Nelson IV turned himself in Monday and is being held in the Durham County jail under $275,000 bail, the university said. Nelson, 22, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
Campus officials said two NCCU officers were on their way to a residence hall for a safety discussion at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when they approached an illegally parked car near Lawson Street and South Alston Avenue.
The officers asked the driver for identification. The driver, later identified as Nelson, became uncooperative and struck one of officers with his car as he drove away, police said.
The officer, whose name was not made public by NCCU officials, fired at least one shot at the fleeing car, the university said. Paramedics transported the injured officer to the hospital, where he was treated and released, police said.
