Edwin Maurice Pennix of Siler City has been charged with selling and delivering cocaine and marijuana as Chatham County sheriff's deputies investigate the deaths of three people who used contaminated cocaine last weekend.
Deputies arrested Pennix, 38, of Colonial Park Road on Sunday, Capt. Doug Stuart said, and he was being held in lieu of $260,000 bail.
He was charged with one felony count each of sale and delivery of cocaine, sale and delivery of marijuana and conspiracy to sell and deliver cocaine, Stuart said.
Deputies identified the dead as Michael Currie, 42, of Bear Creek; Randal Welch, 24, of Franklinville; and Perry Saunders, 23, of Aurora, Mo.
They were among 10 people who ingested the cocaine. The other seven needed treatment.
The 10 had used cocaine apparently mixed with a narcotic painkiller, officials said.
The sheriff’s office, joined by the State Bureau of Investigation and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, was continuing the investigation.
Officials asked that anyone with any information that might help investigators contact the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit at 919-545-8139.
