Three charged in back-road race that killed driver in Orange County

Three people face charges from state troopers in connection with an April 2 car race that killed a 16-year-old Mebane boy when his car crashed into a wall and rolled over on Lebanon Road in orange County.

Three teens face street-racing charges in connection with a fatal crash in Orange County on April 2, the State Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

Kameron Wayne Clevenger, 19, of 500 Stonewall Drive in Mebane; McCray Austin Williams, 16, of 1426 Payne Road in Graham, and Pavel Henry Jones, 18, of 506 S. Fourth St. in Mebane have been charged following an investigation, troopers said.

The daytime crash killed Desmond Piccini, 16, of Mebane when his 1989 Mustang went off Lebanon Road near Mill Creek Road, hit a stone wall and overturned.

Troopers said at the time that speed appeared to be a factor in the accident.

Clevenger was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, being involved with a prearranged speed competition, careless and reckless driving and misdemeanor child abuse.

Williams was charged with aiding and abetting a prearranged competition, and Jones was accused of being involved in a spontaneous speed competition.

Williams was a passenger in Piccini’s car, troopers said.

The three charged were given notices to appear in court in Orange County on June 12.
