Three men who hijacked a car Wednesday evening and then apparently robbed a Subway restaurant slipped away from police after a car chase on Fayetteville Street.
Police said the case began when a man reported that three men in their teens or early 20s showed him a gun and stole his phone and car after he had given them a ride from a motel to Cook Road Park on Cook Road about 6:15 p.m.
His car was a white, 2004 Chevrolet Impala, and that kind of car was what three men arrived in and fled in when they robbed the Subway at 3600 Hillsborough Road about 9:45 p.m., police were told. They said the trio punched and choked the clerk before leaving with money and a phone.
About 10:30 p.m., an officer spotted the man’s stolen car near N.C. 55 and East Cornwallis Road, but it fled when he tried to stop it. A chase led south on Fayetteville Street, then back north, and police lost sight of the Impala, a spokeswoman said.
Then they found the car wrecked in the front yard of a house in the 3800 block of Fayetteville, the block south of Cook Road, where the hijacking happened.
The suspects were not with the car when officers found it, the spokeswoman said.
