The driver of a car reportedly stolen and used in an armed robbery died Thursday night when the car wrecked while police were chasing it in the 2700 block of Riddle Road, police said Friday.
Police did not disclose the driver’s identity Friday, but a spokeswoman said detectives had confirmed that the Chrysler 200 that ran into a parked truck was the one stolen Wednesday night in a parking lot in the 3600 block of North Duke Street. A woman told police that a man had pointed a gun at her and demanded her keys.
An officer in an unmarked police car saw the Chrysler going north on South Alston Street less than a half-hour after a Circle K convenience store on Hope Valley Road was robbed by three armed men who took cigarettes and fled in a car like the Chrysler, the spokeswoman said.
A marked police car took over from the unmarked car and tried to stop the Chrysler, police said. Its driver, who was alone, sped away and crashed less than 30 seconds later, they said.
