The driver of the lone car in a fatal crash on Cheek Road in Durham County last week has been charged with felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired and ordered held on $1 million bail.
Anthony Todd Pearce, 41, of Durham was charged by state troopers who investigated the accident that happened about 3:45 a.m. Thursday.
A section of Cheek Road was closed for several hours while troopers investigated the crash in which they said Pearce’s westbound car went off the right side of the road, hit a tree, rolled over and hit a second tree.
The crash killed Tracey Braswell Lee, 44, of Four Oaks in Johnston County. Pearce was treated at a hospital and released, the State Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said they believed speed and drugs contributed to the crash.
He is scheduled for a court hearing on June 8.
Pearce also was charged with simple assault on Friday, while he was being held at the Durham County Jail.
On Monday, authorities cited a 2007 arrest warrant in charging him with failure to pay child support.
