Benson police said Monday that a Selma man was found fatally shot in the yard of a home late Sunday, and they are treating the case as a homicide.
Richard Longmire, 39, who lived on Thorne Road in Selma, had been shot twice when officers found him in the yard of 325. W. Harnett St. shortly before 11 p.m., police said in a statement.
Officers had been dispatched to investigate a report of shots being fired at that address, they said.
Medics and firefighters tried to revive Longmire at the scene but could not, the statement said.
Chief Kenneth Edwards said investigators had searched the West Harnett Street house and interviewed several witnesses.
Edwards did not say if police had determined why Longmire was at the Benson house.
