A 21-year-old man died early Friday as he was riding in the car of a suspected drunken driver who ran off the road in northern Wake County and crashed into a tree and rock wall.
Simon Peter Curran of 7433 Longstreet Drive in Raleigh died at the scene, said Lt. Jeff Gordon, a spokesman with the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The driver of the car, Morris Lee Wilks, 20, of 100 Farrington Drive in Raleigh, was taken to the Wake County jail after state troopers charged him with driving while impaired, reckless driving and a provisional license violation, Gordon said. Wilks was released on an unsecured bond.
The single-car accident happened just before 3 a.m. on Mt. Vernon Church Road, Gordon said.
Wilks was driving a 2007 Toyota south on Mt. Vernon Church Road when the car entered a curve, veered off the right side of the road and struck a tree. The car continued moving south and crashed into a rock wall, Gordon said.
Wilks and another passenger, Marquian Javon Sanders, 19, of Raleigh, were treated for minor injuries.
State troopers are consulting the Wake County District Attorney’s office regarding more charges that may be filed against Wilks as a consequence of Curran’s death, Gordon said.
