A shooting late Thursday in southern Durham claimed the life of a 20-year-old man and is being treated as a homicide, police said.
Police found Javaun Devonte Graves of Durham wounded when they answered a call about shots being fired on Mutual Drive, spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.
Graves died a short time later at Durham University Hospital, she said.
Detectives determined that Graves had been shot in the 700 block of Atlantic Street, where Atlantic and Mutual intersect, Michael said. They said it appeared to be an intentional shooting, not a random attack.
Police got the call a little before 10:30 p.m. to the neighborhood, which is near Fayetteville Street and the American Tobacco Trail.
Police ask anyone with information to call Investigator E. Ortiz at 919-560-4440, ext. 29337, or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.
