A Raleigh city worker has been charged with murder and felony child abuse in Chatham County in the death of his infant son, the Chatham sheriff's office said.
Jeffery Scott Ferguson Jr., 24, of 98 Haywood Road in Moncure, was arrested Friday afternoon at Pullen Park in Raleigh, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Now suspended, Ferguson had been a senior gardener in the Parks and Recreation department.
Ferguson became a suspect in an investigation that began after UNC Hospitals told the sheriff’s office on Dec. 5 that it was treating a child who medical personnel suspected was the victim of child abuse, the statement said.
The incident was described at the time as having involved people lived in “the 100 block of Haywood Road,” according to the statement.

The baby, who was less than a year old, died of injuries from the incident, officials said.
Ferguson was held in the Chatham County Jail and scheduled for a court appearance Jan. 4.
