A 25-year-old Raleigh man faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon because of what police said was an attempt to stab a Crabtree Valley mall police officer in the face on Christmas Eve.
City police charged Kwame Antonio Signal of 5708 Mial Plantation Road with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon – one with intent to kill and one for attacking a government employee.
Under state law, officers for the mall’s force are fully accredited police officers with jurisdiction on mall property.
An arrest warrant said Officer Z.S. Finch had stopped Signal during an attempt to break into a 2012 Toyota parked at the mall.
Signal, police charged, tried to stab Finch in the face with a knife before he was subdued.
Police also charged Signal with attempted breaking into or entering a car to steal things of value, a misdemeanor.
Signal was hurt in the altercation and was arrested on Christmas afternoon after he was released from WakeMed Hospital.
Signal was held in lieu of $125,000 bail and scheduled for a Monday court appearance.
