A man robbed a State Employees Credit Union branch in northern Chatham County on Wednesday and fled on foot through nearby woods, the Chatham County Sheriff's Office said.
The holdup happened about 3 p.m. in the bank on North Chatham Parkway, off U.S. 15-501 just south of Old Lystra Road.
The area carries a Chapel Hill postal address.
Deputies said a bank manager called to report the robbery seconds after the sheriff’s office received a distress alarm from the building.
The robber was described as a black man who wore a New York Yankees cap, a horizontally striped gray hoodie, a gray T-shirt and black gloves, jeans and athletic shoes.
The man used a white T-shirt to cover his lower face and wore sunglasses.
Deputies said it was not clear if the man had a gun.
The man fled on foot, deputies said, and a K-9 unit tracked him through woods to a road, where they suspect he was picked up by a small gray SUV that is believed to have dropped him off at the bank.
Anyone who can help authorities identify a suspect or has any information that might help them was being asked to call the sheriff’s office at 919-542-2911.
