A 20-year-old man who set up a nighttime meeting Wednesday at a Fayetteville Street gas station to sell some shoes was seriously wounded by gunshots instead, police said.
The man was shot after two men got into the backseat of his car at the Caroco station at 3700 Fayetteville St., at the corner of Cook Road.
Two more men arrived in a second car, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.
While the two men in the backseat were discussing the transaction, police said, the seller was shot and all four of the others fled in the second car.
Police had not charged anyone in the incident Thursday morning.
They asked that anyone with information about what happened or who was involved call CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
