Johnston County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man and a woman Thursday in connection with a double homicide near Newton Grove last week, according to the sheriff’s office, but the investigation is ongoing.
Gerald Paul Jr., 21, of the 400 block of North 12th St. in Erwin was being held in the Harnett County jail on a possession of methamphetamine charge and a parole violation at the time of his arrest by Johnston County deputies.
Tara Nicole Wilson, 19, of the 300 block of South Orange Avenue in Dunn was charged with accessory after the fact for both homicides, Capt. Jeff Caldwell said.
Paul was charged with the murder of Matthew Scott Jones, 30, of Newton Grove and Jessica May Pyatte, 24, of Lexington, Caldwell said. Pyatte was believed to be staying with friends in the area at the time of her death, Caldwell said.
Never miss a local story.
On March 10 at about 4:30 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call about a possible death. Caldwell said Jones and Pyatte were found with fatal gunshot wounds inside a home on the 100 block of Unity Drive off Alonzo Road, outside Newton Grove.
Jones’s two-year-old son also was found at the scene but was unharmed, Caldwell said. He is now in the care of other family.
The sheriff’s office was releasing information about the weapon used in the shootings or a possible motive, Caldwell said. When asked if drugs or alcohol were involved, Caldwell declined to comment.
“This investigation is still ongoing,” he said. “It has not ended with the arrest of these two individuals.”
Caldwell also would not comment on whether or not the sheriff’s office is seeking additional suspects.
