An arrest for what police said was a robbery attempt on a city street Tuesday afternoon included an unusual combination of charges – assault, attempted robbery, communicating threats and indecent exposure.
An arrest warrant accused Burt Vernard, 55, of 1742 Proctor Road in Raleigh of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats, the first a felony and the other two misdemeanors.
Police said those involved swinging a full beer bottle at a man’s head, using a broken bottle in an attempt to get the man’s valuables and threatening to find and hurt the man when Vernard “got out of jail.”
Somewhere in all that, police said, Vernard relieved himself in front of the man he allegedly was trying to rob and another witness. That led to the fourth charge.
Police arrested Vernard in the 800 block of East Hargett St., where they said the robbery attempt happened Records showed Wednesday that he had been free on bail.
