Police found two children safe Wednesday night after a carjacker abandoned a car he had stolen while they were in the back seat as adults talked nearby, officials said.
The 1-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl were in the Acura parked in front of the Ichiban Hibachi Supreme Buffet restaurant at 2000 Avondale Drive, police said. Their mother and relatives were talking in front of the business, they reported.
The suspect parked a stolen Volvo in the lot and got into the Acura and drove off, police said.
The car and the children were found about 20 minutes later in the 400 block of Green Street, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said. There didn’t appear to be anything missing from the car.
Officers and a police dog searched the area around the car, but they could not track down the thief, Michael said.
Police asked anyone with information about the incident or the man who took the car to call CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.
