DURHAM Two teenagers were charged with murder Thursday and a 21-year-old man was arrested hours after a cab driver was shot to death at a La Quinta Inn near Interstate 40.
Police said they found the men near the hotel, two of them in a room at a Red Roof Inn and the third along railroad tracks.
The driver, Ameer Suliman, 46, collapsed in the lobby of the La Quinta at 1910 Westpark Drive, off N.C. 55, west of Research Triangle Park. He died at a hospital, police said.
Charged with his killing and with an armed robbery a short time earlier were Zyon McNeil, 17, and a 15-year-old boy, both from Durham, police said Friday.
Never miss a local story.
Trayvion Lyons, 21, of Durham was charged with being an accessory after a murder, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said. She did not say what role he played.
Suliman was shot about 1 p.m., police said. He had gone into the hotel to ask for help, then collapsed, they said.
About 12:30 p.m., police got a call that two people had robbed a 17-year-old at a subdivision’s swimming pool on Whispering Oak Lane, about 13 miles from the La Quinta.
The teen told officers that two people had asked to borrow his telephone and called a taxi, then they showed him a gun and took the phone, his cash and a pair of headphones.
Police have not said that Suliman drove the cab that picked up the robbery suspects.
Investigators reported that when they arrested McNeil, Lyons and the 15-year-old, they found items that belonged to Suliman, a gun and items that belonged to the teen at the swimming pool.
McNeil was held without bond in the Durham County Detention Center. Lyons was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
The 15-year-old was held at the Durham County Youth Home.
